4 Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System and Why It Matters

Whether you’re suffering from an illness or just want to stay healthy, understanding how your immune system works and how to improve it will be key to your success.

While the basics of immune health may seem simple, understanding what affects our body’s immunity and how to strengthen it can actually be quite complex.

Here are four ways to strengthen your immune system and why having a strong immune system is so important!

 What Is An Immune System?

An immune system is a collection of specialized cells, tissues, and organs whose primary function is to protect you from pathogens, or germs.

The immune system can be thought of as a security system that detects threats within your body.

Pathogens include bacteria, viruses, fungi (like yeast), parasites, and some types of cancer cells.

Normally living tissues in your body are not seen as threats by your immune system.

This means that when something has invaded your body, whether it’s a simple cold virus or invasive tumor cells, different parts of your immune system work together to either get rid of these foreign invaders (by killing them) or make them leave peacefully so they do not stay and grow into an infection.

In order for the immune system to work properly, it needs constant input: specific proteins (called antigens) on bacteria and viruses must constantly be changing so they aren’t recognized as benign even after one exposure.

Why Is A Strong Immune System Important?

A strong immune system is important for our health and is the first line of defence against viruses, bacteria, fungal infections, parasites and even some cancers.

Without it, we are much more susceptible to developing conditions such as diabetes, cancer and autoimmune disorders like multiple sclerosis.

The strongest immune systems exist in healthy individuals but there are a number of ways that you can strengthen your own immune system through diet, exercise and natural supplements like vitamin D.

What Causes A Weak Immune System?

Everybody gets sick from time to time.

Whether it’s a little sniffle, a sore throat or something more serious, it’s no fun being laid up in bed with nothing but Netflix and Pepto Bismol for company.

If you’re like most people, though, you don’t want your immune system taking days off because of something as minor as a cold.

So how can you avoid catching every bug that comes your way?

Start by strengthening your immune system!

4 Tips to Safeguard Your Immune System Through Harmattan

During Harmattan, we often notice that our immune system is compromised.

Here are 4 tips you can use to build up your immune system.

These tips are also important during cold and flu season, but Harmattan is especially susceptible because it’s dry.

Exposure to wind and dust strips moisture from our skin, hair, nose, you name it! which can cause various infections.

Follow these tips during Harmattan as well as other times of year for optimal health.

1) Maintain a Diet Packed With Vitamins and Minerals

A diet that’s rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other essential nutrients gives your immune system a boost.

Certain nutrients can also help fight infection. Avocados are one example of nutrient-dense food that provides both antioxidant vitamins (A, C, E) as well as an array of minerals, calcium, copper, iron and magnesium, all of which have been associated with improved immune health.

2) Use Adequate Stress Reduction Techniques

As you probably know, stress can contribute greatly to physical illness as well as depression.

There are a number of ways you can improve your stress levels.

What’s important is that you find what works for you, because different things work for different people.

For example, I find meditation helps me release stress and I practice it daily in some form or another; others find it annoying or unhelpful.

Find out what works for you and use it! Here are two common methods:

Meditation – The idea behind meditation is simple: You sit quietly, focus on your breathing, and attempt to quieten your mind by clearing away all thoughts.

Mindfulness exercises – Similar to meditation in that they involve sitting quietly while attempting to clear away thoughts from your mind.

3) Make Hydration a Top Priority

When you’re busy, it can be difficult to stay hydrated—especially in warm climates.

The best way to keep your immune system running strong is by maintaining proper hydration levels.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends drinking at least 64 ounces of water per day.

Many studies show that even mild dehydration can negatively impact brain function and overall energy levels.

Staying properly hydrated is a great way to ensure your immune system stays primed for attack.

Also try upping your intake of fruits and vegetables (particularly vitamin C-rich ones like strawberries) as well as foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked with stronger immunity.

Finally, aim to avoid stressful situations whenever possible; they not only take a toll on mood but also sap body resources that could otherwise be directed toward defending against invaders.

4) Home Care During harmattan

Whenever you are at home, make sure you keep your windows shut as much as possible.

Keeping them open will not only disrupt your sleep but will also weaken your immune system.

In fact, many people who don’t take proper precautions during harmattan often end up with colds after harmattan is over.

Remember that dampness breeds germs and anything harmful for us thrives in moist environments.

Take frequent hot showers and drink lots of water or chamomile tea. Chamomile has antiseptic properties which help boost your immune system.

Garlic also has excellent antiseptic properties which work well in fighting infectious organisms.

You can either cook it or eat it raw; just remember to chew it thoroughly if you want all its benefits!

The best way to strengthen your immune system is by knowing which habits work and those that don’t.

For example, eating an unhealthy diet full of processed foods can weaken your body’s ability to fight off infection.

On the other hand, keeping stress levels low is a key part of keeping your immune system in tip-top shape.

Exercise also has been proven time and again to bolster our immunity.

We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about these natural ways to build up your immune system!

With these simple lifestyle changes, you are sure to have a strong immunity for years to come!
